Diamonds are rare and costly and their value increases tremendously because of their carat weight, cut and clarity and color. There are different natural-colored diamonds that are available in the market including yellow, white, orange, brown, blue, red, green and pink diamonds.
Diamonds are the rarest precious stones on earth. For generations diamonds have proven their worth by giving a sense of pride, éclat and beauty to its owners. It is one of the best gifts that nature has to offer. Their sheer radiance and rarity make diamonds one of the most expensive natural gems in the world. Purchasing a diamond is indeed a special occasion. Diamonds are not merely expensive shiny stones. Diamonds signify the expression of pure love and commitment which will be cherished and worn for a lifetime. When shopping for the perfect diamond it is crucial to understand the importance of the 4 C's of a diamond. The 4 C's of a diamond are determining factors that are studied by jewelers to establish its value. The 4C's of diamonds are:
Carat
The size of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Diamond sizes are also measured in points, whereby a one carat diamond equals 100 points. When it comes to diamonds, it's important to remember that bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. For example, a poorly cut one carat diamond might pale in significance compared with a beautifully crafted smaller diamond. The overall quality of the diamond is always the result of a combination of the 4 Cs.
Many tons of ore must be mined and processed in order to produce a polished one carat diamond, and during the polishing process itself half of the rough diamond's weight is turned into dust. Large size diamonds are rare and generally pricey.
Cut
Among the 4 C's, the cut is the only feature that is added by human hands to enhance the beauty and shine of this precious stone. One must not confuse cut of a diamond with its shapes. Through cut we enhance the amount of light reflected by it, which in turn increases its radiance. A fine cut diamond reflects light just like a shining star.
Diamonds can be cut in many different shapes. The most popular shapes are Heart, Princess, Round, Oval, Pear, Asscher, Triangle and Radiant.
Color
The best color of a diamond is no color at all. Light reflected through a diamond is scattered into all colors of the rainbow. Colorless diamonds come with a high price tag and are rare. Diamonds with shades of brown and yellow are less pricey. Shades of yellow or brown in any diamonds are due to the minute amount of elements like nitrogen in the carbon crystal framework. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) classifies low saturation yellow and brown diamonds as diamonds in the normal color range, and applies a grading scale from 'D' (colorless) to 'Z' (light yellow). Diamonds of a different color, such as blue, are called fancy colored diamonds, and fall under a different grading scale.
Clarity
The brilliance in the radiance of any diamond is determined by its flawless purity. Proximately every diamond contains minute natural birthmarks known as inclusions. The clarity of a diamond is influenced by the presence of color, size, position and number of inclusions, more popularly known as "nature's birthmarks". Blemishes are also commonly found on the surface of diamonds.
Just follow these 4 C's and choose the right diamond for that special someone you love. As we all know "Diamonds are forever".
